The New Retirement ParadigmThe New Retirement Paradigm™ Retirement is different today for our clients than it was for their parents. Our clients are living longer and they’ll need more money. Our clients are more active and in better health. They want to travel more and do more things that require money. Longer life also means that inflation will have a more significant impact on retirement needs. As the years go by costs will go up, again more money. There is an old saying that goes: “Getting old isn’t so bad, if you have your health and enough money.”
Life is also more interesting if one can continue to provide value to others after retirement. This may mean a continuation of meaningful employment. Many of our clients tell us they like the challenge of their jobs and would like to continue to work, but with less stress and more free time. This may mean a somewhat restructured job doing more of what they are good at and like to do, and less of the mundane. Continuing to work can make retirement more interesting. It can also provide more money. But one needs to think it through and start restructuring one’s work life five to ten years before actual retirement begins.
Retirement doesn’t need to be a dramatic change from work to leisure. Instead it can be a gentle shift, keeping the best from our working lives while adding time to enjoy activities we cherish. One of our clients noted: “This New Retirement Paradigm™ isn’t so much retiring as it is a rewiring of our lives.”
